Fungi made their appearance on Earth possibly as far back as 800 million years ago and, since then, have been quietly playing a major role in nurturing life and maintaining the balance of ecosystems. Humans have pretty much been oblivious to the important role of fungi, thinking of them as either a useful ingredient in Italian dishes or, the cause of a nasty itch in delicate places.
